“Wake Up and Get Dressed!”

On Dec. 1, Pastor Jim preaches on Romans 13:11-14.

11 Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12 the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13 let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

“Advent” comes from the Latin word “Adventus” which means “Coming.” It’s the start of something new. Some of you will remember the song sung by Mama Cass Elliot released in 1970:

There’s a new world coming
And it’s just around the bend
There’s a new world coming
This one’s coming to an end

There’s a new voice calling
You can hear it if you try
And it’s growing stronger
With each day that passes by

There’s a brand new morning
Rising clear and sweet and free
There’s a new day dawning
That belongs to you and me

Yes a new world’s coming
The one we’ve had visions of
Coming in peace, coming in joy, coming in love.

Advent, like the song, tells of a momentous “new world” thing that is coming. We can’t stop it or manage it. We certainly can’t control it, because it’s coming from God. I believe that in these uncertain times for the United Methodist Church and perhaps for us as individuals, God is about to do a new thing. Let’s wake up, look up, and be ready.
