Jesus, it is 2017 – Where are you?
By: David McMillan
Do you feel, as I do, that in today’s world, the risen Christ seems to either be ignored by us or He has taken a long vacation? I do not have enough time or paper to list the issues that are swirling around us: immigration, bigotry, judging and disrespect of others, bullying tactics destroying young lives on social media, countries that seem to be cheering our country’s demise, attendance and membership throughout the protestant churches on the decline, etc., etc.
How in God’s name can we, His Ambassadors, not lose hope in these times?
I believe our encounter with the Living Christ demands a response from us: Believe being his child is enough, choose His grace and build a relationship with Him. How? A few suggestions that have helped me.
Start by giving him your time driving to work, your lunch break, when the kids are down for a nap, long walks – talk to Him like one that loves you unconditionally. Talk to Him, the one who created constellations and caterpillars, the one who knows you completely and fully.
Read the commandments He said were most important and focus on those daily (Matthew 22:36-40). The living Christ can be found fully in these words that will live forever. Give Him all your love and then give ALL others your love and care.
One other suggestion, from the book Searching for Sunday by Rachel Evans: St. Benedict wrote in his Rule – “All guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ.” What if our churches had this as their motto? What if we had this as our own personal motto? I believe we would encounter the Living Christ – now and forever.
