Raising 5 boys we had to deal with continual conflict. A common complaint from our brood was “it’s not fair.” 😀
“It’s not fair HE gets the front seat, it’s not fair, HIS slice is bigger.” My standard response to the disgruntled child was “Life’s not fair.” They did NOT like my answer.
The family went on a long trip and we loaded up the van with VHS tapes (old story). The kids selected the critically acclaimed 1999 movie Noah’s Ark (20% on Rotten Tomatoes). Noah was complaining to God about having to build an ark and says to God “it’s not fair.” God’s response to the whiner, “Life isn’t always fair.”
At that moment, all my offspring looked at me in total amazement and said “Dad, that’s what YOU say to us.” I don’t see this beautiful passage in the bible but I do remind them of this quote often.
I am reminded of this story because I’m the whiner now. “It’s not fair that THEY are retiring,” “It’s not fair THEY are taking fantastic vacations,” “It’s not fair that THEY get all the breaks.”
There is so much about life that is not fair, but God (from the movie) reminds us that life is not fair, and we can find comfort that the real God is just and loves us so very much, even when things seem unfair.
“Life Is Not Fair”
I also saw other things in this life that were not fair. The fastest runner does not always win the race; the strongest soldier does not always win the battle; wise people don’t always get the food; smart people don’t always get the wealth; educated people don’t always get the praise they deserve. When the time comes, bad things can happen to anyone! Ecclesiastes 9:11 (ERV)
