The Power of Encountering the Risen Christ
By: Brad McMahon
Jesus said to her ‘Mary.’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabboni!’ (Which means Teacher). – John 20:16.
When He was at table with them, he took the bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and he vanished out of their sight. – Luke 24; 31-32
Very dramatic stuff, the encounter that Mary Magdalene had with the risen Christ and likewise the experience of Cleopus and his fellow traveler on their way to Emmaus. There was great power in those events. Transforming power.
In the dark hours after His crucifixion, the followers of Jesus were in despair, afraid and without hope. Yet Mary Magdalene, Cleopus and all the others who witnessed the risen Christ were transformed by those holy meetings and went on, un-afraid and energized to spread the ‘good news’ and to help establish and grow His church; a church that lives still in the 21st century.
Have you encountered the living Christ lately? At an Emmaus Walk? When you were at a low place in life and felt His touch through the hand of a dear friend? When the Sunday message spoke to you in such a personal way? In a brilliant sunset? I hope and pray that you recognized Him, felt the power of the encounter and moved on from that moment, re-energized, eyes opened.
Or maybe, like Mary, He was in your presence but you didn’t recognize Him when he was standing right before you. I pray that you will seek Him once more and be patient. For if you are seeking Him, the day is near when your eyes will be opened and you will experience the transforming power of Jesus working in your life.
He is risen! He is risen indeed!
