“What about the Weeds?”

Greetings!

We live in a beautiful, wonderful world.  It is a world filled with snow-capped mountains and crystal-clear streams; a world with cuddly children, laughing teenagers, and loving families.  We live in a world where neighbors care for one another, and people of goodwill extend a hand to help people who struggle.

Unfortunately, we also live in a world that, at times, appears to be the exact opposite of the world described above.
In the parable we will hear on Sunday (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43), Jesus recognizes that “weeds” are growing in God’s beautiful Creation.

The question Jesus raises for me is, “What about the weeds?”  As people of faith, what should we do about the weeds growing in God’s beautiful creation? I think that’s a good question for us to explore today, as we try to make our way through a world filled with all sorts of “weeds”.

As part of worship this week, I invite you to:

  • Read Jesus’ parable (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43) in advance.
  • Reflect on the guidance Jesus gives for how to live in a world that is filled with goodness and love, but also contains its fair share of “weeds.”
  • Rejoice in ways God is working through the ministries of Oak Hill to do good.
  • Listen and enjoy as Susan Coffman sings “My Task” by E.L. Ashford.

Blessings,

Stephen
