A Little About Our Youth Director

Hello! My name is Matthew Villegas and I am the Director of Youth Ministries here at Oak Hill UMC. I am so glad you want to know more about our youth group!

I have been in youth ministry for going on seven years now, and it is my greatest passion. I have been here at Oak Hill UMC for almost two years, and my time here has been nothing short of wonderful. The youth here are incredibly unique and gifted, and their families and I have built strong relationships. I am an extroverted, easy-going, take- youth-seriously kind of youth pastor, and I can guarantee that no child will go unnoticed in our ministry.

Our vision is to have a growing and healthy youth ministry that glorifies God and serves its community by being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.

We want to inspire youth to LIVE, LAUGH, AND LOVE while being on mission for Jesus Christ.

By the time every youth leaves or graduates from Oak Hill Youth Ministries they will know they are Known by God, Loved By God, and Called By God to live a life of forgiveness and purpose through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Sunday School
Oak Hill UMC offers a Sunday morning worship opportunity for youth at 10 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall building. This class is led by two experienced and passionate Sunday School teachers, Nikki Loftin and Lisa Jackson, both of whom have worked with youth in the classroom environment for many years. Nikki and Lisa create fun and engaging lessons that are relevant and Gospel-filled! Please, come and join us! We’d love to get to know you and worship with you.

Youth Choir/Praise Band
YC/PB will meet the two or three Sundays before a planned performance. If you would like to perform a solo/duet, but don’t want to be in either group, send our choir director an email, and we will find opportunities for you! If you are interested, please respond, so we’ll know how many to prepare for! Choir is a great way for everyone to be involved in a fun musical outlet. Don’t play an instrument? No problem! Can’t really carry a tune? No problem! We welcome all ages and abilities. For more information about our youth choir, contact Kati Cox, our assistant choir director and youth choir director, at katiacox@gmail.com.

Sunday nights are the best way to be involved with the youth ministry at Oak Hill! We meet at 5 p.m. in Fellowship Hall for a game and dinner. At 6 p.m. we head into the Youth Lounge. This is a time for worship, study, discussion, and praise. We finish with joys, concerns, and prayer as a family at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join us on Sunday nights, and everyone is encouraged to bring friends! Confirmation (Orientation 1/30/2019, 6:30 p.m., Youth Lounge)
This 12-week journey encourages students to encounter the faith narrative from creation to Christianity, embrace the essential beliefs and practices of the United Methodist Church, and embody the confirmation vows and embark on the Christian discipleship journey. Confirmation takes place each year for seventh grade and up in the spring semester. Class is from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Youth Lounge. We aren’t very good at math, but we do know that one youth + one caring adult = really great stuff. At Oak Hill Youth Ministries, we have a variety of ways to get involved and to change the life of a teenager, because we realize that not everyone has the same spiritual gifts—and we think that’s GREAT! And although not all of our teenagers are the same, they do have one thing in common: They need amazing adults to show them how to live a life that honors God by investing in them. For more information on how to volunteer with our youth, contact Director of Youth Ministries Matt Villegas at matt@oakhillumc.org.

Beyond Our Walls
Our youth are involved in service in a variety of ways within our church, our community, and our world. During the year we offer many ways to serve locally, including serving at the FreeStore, participating in local mission trips with our community ministries team, visiting assisted living homes, and much more. These are incredible opportunities for our students to serve and bring hope where it’s needed. Our recent activities included visits to:

– Legacy Oaks Assisted Living Facility
– Austin Reuse Store
– Community First Village
– Urban Roots Farm
– Central Texas Food Bank
– BookSpring
– New Orleans Camp Restore

We also helped clean up Dick Nichols Park, made a blanket for nursing home residents, participated in a food drive, took a mission trip to the Rio Grande Valley, and helped with a drive to collect backpacks and school supplies.

Summer Ministries
Our summers start at the beginning of June with a super fun week of activities called Youth Week. It’s an awesome way to get connected, get involved, and have a great time kicking off summer fun! We also volunteer to assist with Vacation Bible School each year in June. Youth also have the special opportunity to attend mission trips, camps, and other great activities over the summer months. Hope you can be apart of the fun!
