OHUMC Early Response Team

Under the umbrella of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the Rio Texas Conference sponsors Early Response Teams (ERT) across our conference area. As stated in the ERT Handbook, “The Mission of an Early Response Team is to provide a caring Christian presence in the aftermath of a disaster.”  The ER Teams are trained primarily to respond within our conference area and their role is to prevent further damage to a family’s personal property as much as possible. As such, we may be called upon to do a variety of tasks from mucking (cleaning) out a recently flooded home, putting tarps on damaged roofs, clearing away debris or boarding up broken windows.

To prepare individuals who might be interested in helping families after a disaster, the Rio Texas Conference offers a one-day training session on the ERT’s mission, timing, team member functions, and ways to prevent further damage to a family’s home. The $30 fee for the training includes all training materials, snack and lunch, T-shirt, background check and identification badge.  For members whose badges have expired within the last 6 months, simply go through the online renewal course to update your badge.

Oak Hill UMC is hosting the Basic Training class on September 25, 2021 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. for anyone interested in becoming part of this outreach ministry.  Due to COVID, we will be practicing social distancing and requiring masks.

For more information about becoming part of our ERT, please contact either Ron Kettler at ronkettlerphd@gmail.com or Adam Matustik at tubaman693@yahoo.com.
