I feel like I have encountered the living Christ when I went to I.H.N. with my dad to eat dinner with the families staying at the church. I met an 11-year old girl named Jasmine. She played and looked like a normal girl, but I knew she did not have a home.
He (Jesus) answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and will all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. Luke 10:27
That bible verse sounded special and in some strange way, familiar. Not the familiar like hearing or seeing it before, but like it stating what was happening in my life. I loved Jasmine as a friend, a classmate, or in biblical terms, a neighbor.
I told my mom, “I can’t imagine an 11-year old like me as a homeless person.” My mom told me the reason I could not imagine that was because I couldn’t imagine myself homeless.
That night I asked Jasmine if she liked to move around a lot. She said “no,” so I asked a happier question. I asked her what church she’d been to was her favorite. She said, “here.” I know she liked it because she felt like part of a family.
I wish she stayed so we could get to know each other more, but she left the next day. Jasmine and all the other children I met are all in my prayers. I’m so glad our church could turn them towards a much less dark future.
