This Sunday marks the beginning of Advent – a 4-week season leading up to Christmas. The word “advent” comes from the Latin meaning “to come to” or “to come toward.” During Advent we remember and reflect on how God comes into the world and into our lives through the Christ.

One of our rituals at Oak Hill is the lighting of candles on our Advent wreath. Each Sunday we will light a candle in recognition of gifts God offers us in Christ.

Many of us received Advent wreath kids from the church. (If you don’t have an Advent wreath, you can easily make one using instruction on the internet). I encourage you to have your Advent wreath and matches or a lighter ready at the beginning of worship. As we light the first candle on our Advent wreath in the sanctuary, you can light the first candle on your wreath at home.

This week we will light the candle of Peace. In a world filled with so much hurt and brokenness, we remember that Christ offers a “peace that passes all understanding.”

We light the candle of Peace this week, because there is a direct connection with the scripture passage for this week (Luke 1:26-28). In that story, the angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she “will conceive in her womb and bear a son.” She is to name him Jesus.
