“Spiritual Tools for Challenging Times: Study” – Rev. Stephen Sanders 03-21-21

This week we are presenting Bibles to 3rd and 4th graders and praying God’s blessing upon these young people.

The Bible is the Church’s sacred text. Through its stories, the Bible tells THE story of God’s Love for the world, beginning with Creation and concluding with a New Creation.

Yet many of us don’t deeply engage with scripture. Perhaps we don’t know where to begin. Or we don’t know how to make sense of difficult stories. Or we have been confused by debates over inerrancy, infallibility, or inspiration. Or we have been turned off by people who use the Bible as a weapon against others.

I confess that I did not seriously read and engage with the Bible until I attended seminary. (Spoiler alert: You have to read the Bible in seminary!) There I had faithful professors teach me to read scripture, ask good questions, wrestle with a text, and listen for how it speaks to my life and the world to do. One of my great joys as a pastor has been helping others do the same.

As we present Bibles to 3rd and 4th graders, we will pray God’s blessing upon them as they learn to read and study the Bible – their Bibles. May we all learn to engage with scripture that we might enjoy the blessing of a deeper life with God and with one another.
