“The Secrets We Share: Addiction”

On January 28, Pastor Katy preaches on Mark 5:1-9.

I’ve often thought that heaven would look a bit like the Garden of Eden, an abundance of food and time to just relax in nature and in God’s presence. But even in Eden, Adam and Eve find themselves hiding from God. The story of the Gerasene Demoniac is about a man who hides from God, society, and even himself. He lives among the tombs, and Scripture tells us that he’s possessed by an unclean spirit. What’s clear is that this man is not in control. Something else has taken over his life and his body and is slowly killing him. It’s easy from the outside to say what this man needs, but no human attempts to help him have worked. Addiction has much in common with the unclean spirit that has taken over this man’s life and body. It inhabits a person beyond their own control and leads them to think they can hide from God. The Twelve Step programs for those who suffer from addiction have a deeply spiritual foundation for a reason; there are some things we simply cannot do without God. No matter what tomb addiction has led someone into, Jesus has conquered the tomb, and through Him, we all find redemption and life.
