“Wonderful Counselor”

On November 27, Pastor Jim preaches on Isaiah 9:6. In Handel’s “Messiah” the composer included the majestic words of Isaiah 9:6, which describe the coming king. Some Old Testament scholars believe that Isaiah was referring to Hezekiah. Christians hear the message of the messiah in these words:

For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Over Advent we will be thinking together about the names of this king and how they apply to Jesus. This Sunday our topic will be “Wonderful Counselor.” Handel put a comma between “wonderful” and “counselor.’  Actually, there is no comma. The words go together: He is a “Wonderful Counselor.” As I prepare the sermon, I’m thinking about how Jesus counsels us in some wonderful ways.
