On February 4, Pastor Jim preaches on 2 Samuel 18:32-19:4.
“The only way to get through grief is to grieve.”
We have had a number of deaths in our church family this past month. People sometimes say, “It must be difficult to be a pastor at times like these.” It is. As a young minister, I suppose I was able to keep more of a professional distance, assuming that death and funerals “didn’t get to me.” The truth is, they did and they do. Parenthood, loss, and life have tenderized me. It’s painful to observe heartache in others, especially the pain of grief, and yet it’s an honor to be allowed to comfort people in grief; to remind them that “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18
We’re going to think together about grief this Sunday. Grief is a secret everyone a with heart shares. It’s coming. How many of us have cried out with David, “If only I had died instead of you!”
