Reflections from a first time volunteer

BY: VALERIE LYDAY

This was my first experience working at the freeze center. I was assigned to a woman who was having a lot of issues and needed someone to specifically take care of her. I sat with her one night, then others did the same after me.

Welcoming our unsheltered brothers & sisters on a cold winter day.

At first, she was very scared, skittish and untrusting. By the end, she had all brand new clothes, shoes, food for her dog, and a hair cut.

She was laughing, visiting and did not want to leave! We watched her blossom before our eyes!

It took a village to help her. But my heart was over flowing with joy when I walked in the last night and heard her laughing.

So worth the few hours I spent helping out!

I think I received the better gift!

Welcome to our new blog series exploring the spiritual impact of service! We often discover God's presence in unexpected ways while serving our neighbors. We invite you to join us on this journey of faith and service as we share stories of transformation and discover the profound ways God moves through our acts of compassion.
